Drink from the better half

Wine Punts - Joel Saliba
Founded in 2006 by Joel Saliba, Wine Punts transforms empty wine bottles from local restaurants into super cool drinking glasses by slicing the bottle in half and repurposing the bottom. Seems simple, right? It is, but there's also a lot that goes into making sure each new glass is not only uniquely elegant, but durable and long lasting as well (more on that below.) What is a "punt," you ask? Well, it's the indentation at the bottom of a wine or champagne bottle, and while there are multiple theories as to why wine bottles have them (structural integrity, especially for sparkling wines, is one) all we care about is that they are what give these glasses their unique look while also serving to remind us how a little creativity can go a long way toward cutting down on waste. After all, sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference.
Process & Materials
Each Wine Punt glass starts off as an empty wine bottle, most of which come from local area restaurants. After the top is cut off and sent away for recycling, the rim of the remaining bottom is fire polished to give each glass a smooth, elegant finish that is consistent with the rest of the glass. Basically you'll have no idea this was sliced from a larger bottle just by looking at the rim, and this process also prevents the cracking and chipping that tends to occur with a more traditional sanding process. Finally, the entire glass is annealed to relieve any internal stresses making the glass able to endure even the harshest use (i.e. industrial dishwasher = no problem.)
